Bear attack due to unsecured attractants

1. A three-year-old girl named Madison from Stevens County was attacked by a black bear while sleeping in a tent near Red Lodge, Montana. The incident occurred late Sunday night, leading to the evacuation of the entire campground.
2. Madison was taken to a medical facility in Billings for treatment of her injuries. Her family has requested privacy but has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with medical expenses as she recovers.
3. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) reported that a bear matching the description of the attacker was captured and killed. The bear had no prior history of conflict but was likely food-conditioned due to unsecured attractants in the area.
4. Chrissy Webb, the Region 5 Communication and Education Program Manager for FWP, explained that both grizzly and black bears are curious omnivores, attracted to a wide range of foods. This curiosity can lead them to areas with scents, such as campsites.
5. Webb emphasized the importance of keeping campsites clean and free of scented items, including toiletries and chapstick, to prevent attracting bears. She advised storing such items in a car or certified bear-resistant container.
6. The incident highlights the need for campers to be vigilant about securing attractants to prevent bear encounters, as bears in the area can become accustomed to human presence if they find food sources.
